[ARCHIVED] Help End Human Trafficking at 5K Event on July 31

Mady’s Movement—a local grassroots organization fighting against human trafficking—will be hosting their inaugural Miles 4 Mady 5k from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 at Walter Hall Park. The race is dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking and celebrating the life of Madelynn Bennetsen, a League City girl whose life was lost to human trafficking in 2020 at the age of 15.

The 5k event is family friendly, and participants can choose to run, jog, or walk. Registration is $40, and each participant will receive an exclusive Mady’s Movement race shirt and medal. Visit the EventBrite page to sign up. The event will also include a DJ, food trucks, and local vendors. All proceeds from the 5k will be donated to The Refuge, a rehabilitation center in Austin that works with young female trafficking victims.

Mady’s Movement was created by Mady’s mother, Nichole Bowie, to educate the public about human trafficking and provide emotional support to parents and others who have experienced the heartbreak of losing a loved one to human trafficking. Her goal is to help people understand that human trafficking is real and can happen to anybody, anywhere. She has built an army of dedicated allies, and the official Facebook group has over 900 members who support one another and share information about other missing children in the hopes of reaching more people.

According to Nichole, Madelynn was a beautiful, grounding soul. “Mady’s personality was infectious and bright,” said Nichole. “She was friends with everyone, no matter the kind of person they were. One of her goals was to become a nurse because of her passion for helping people.”

Madelynn’s life was honored at a recent League City Council meeting, where Mayor Pat Hallisey declared June 8, 2021 as “Madelynn Bennetsen Day.”
