[ARCHIVED] World Migratory Bird Day May 8

World Migratory Bird Day

League City is encouraging residents to take part “World Migratory Bird Day” this Saturday, May 8 at parks across our community, and in their own backyard. Celebrated across the world on two peak days each year – on the second Saturday in May and second Saturday in October – World Migratory Bird Day is the only international awareness-raising and education program that celebrates the migration of bird species along all the major flyways of the world.

Spring Migration is in full swing in League City, which is located along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, and we have plenty of parks in our community and the surrounding Bay Area to take part in World Migratory Bird Day. For a list of places. go to Birding in League City.  To learn more about birdwatching in your own backyard, visit League City's Birding Blog.

“Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!” is the theme of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day and is an open invitation to people everywhere to connect and re-connect with nature by actively listening to - and watching birds - wherever they are. During the pandemic, which slowed down many activities by limiting our movements, people across the world have been listening to and watching birds like never before. For many people around the world, bird song has also been a source of comfort and joy during the pandemic, connecting people to each other and to nature as they remain in place.

Guided Birding Tours May 8

In honor of World Migratory Bird Day, League City is partnering with Kristine Rivers, a Texas Naturalist and Founder of Birding for Fun, to host birdwatching field trips at various times throughout the day on Saturday, May 8 at Challenger 7 Memorial Park. For $20, participants will take part in a two-hour guided birdwatching tour and receive a copy of the new Bay Area Birding Guide. For an extra $15 you can get our exclusive League City birding tote.
