Sergeant Jason Carty had the surprise of a lifetime on the afternoon of June 19 when he unexpectedly helped deliver a baby in a bank parking lot.
Carty, who has been with the League City Police Department for 14 years, was working a second job providing security at the AMOCO Federal Credit Union Bay Colony branch, when suddenly, a car pulled into the parking lot of the building.
A man yelling “help me” in Spanish then jumped out of the car and motioned for the sergeant to approach his vehicle.
When Carty opened the back door of the car, he was shocked to see a pregnant woman ready to give birth.
“She was pushing,” Carty said, “so I immediately called for EMS and at that point there was no stopping it, so I helped deliver the baby.”
The woman gave birth to a healthy, baby girl which she named Camila. Both mom and baby were transported to a local hospital, where Carty later paid them a visit.
“I got to hold her again, but this time wrapped up in a blanket,” he chuckled.
The family has expressed their extreme gratitude for the police officer’s quick thinking and willingness to help without hesitation. Carty says he’s happy he was able to help the family.
“There’s no words to describe the feeling, it felt really good to help somebody. It’s an experience I will never forget.”
