The Gulf Coast Water Authority (GCWA) will perform their annual water quality maintenance activity of the 39-inch water line that conveys treated surface water from their Thomas Mackey Water Treatment Plant (TMWTP) to League City.
The maintenance work will take place beginning April 16 through April 30. The process involves the conversion of the current disinfection compound from mono-chloramine to free chlorine. The free chlorine form of disinfectant has higher disinfection qualities that assists in necessary in-pipe maintenance to prevent nitrification events that can degrade disinfectant residuals below regulatory standards.
This activity will impact all Galveston County water customers of the TMWTP. This temporary change in the treatment process is standard water utility industry practice performed in accordance with State and Federal drinking water regulations. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has been consulted and has approved this method for routine maintenance of potable water systems.
