New Tree Ordinance

tree

In September of 2018, Council approved a new tree preservation ordinance for the City of League City in an effort to protect more trees and preserve the City’s canopy. The ordinance contains three sections: Tree preservation/mitigation, tree maintenance, and street trees. The following are some of the changes included in the City’s new ordinance:

Tree Preservation/Mitigation:

Protected trees must meet the minimum caliper inches for species and be on the protected tree list:

  • Small trees are protected at 6 caliper* inches and larger. (*Caliper inches= tree diameter)
  • Large trees are protected at 12 caliper inches and larger.
  • The previous protected tree list has been expanded and updated to include more species.
  • An exemption has been added for legally conforming, single-family residents. Residents no longer need a permit to remove trees on their property.

Protection of significant trees:

  • Oak or pecan trees that measure 38 caliper inches and larger may not be removed.
  • An appeal process to remove these trees has been included.

Invasive species removal credit:

  • Credits may apply to offset mitigation requirements (must be species on the Invasive species list).

Tree Maintenance:

  • Addition of standards/regulations for pruning for street, sidewalk, and intersection clearance.
  • Regulations for the removal of dead/diseased trees on private property.
  • Standards for maintenance of trees in the City’s right-of-way.

Street Trees:

  • Addition of a minimum distance from streets/curbs, utilities, etc.
  • Addition of root barrier installation requirements.
  • Addition of a street tree list with approved species for small planting areas.
