Mayor proclaims October Domestic Violence Awareness Month

LEAGUE CITY, TEXAS – Mayor Tim Paulissen has proclaimed October as ‘Domestic Violence Awareness Month’ throughout the City of League City.

“Domestic violence is a serious crime that affects people of all races, ages, gender and income levels,” said Paulissen. “On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.”

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the ‘Day of Unity’ held in October 1981. The first awareness month was observed in October 1987 which also marks the launch of the domestic violence toll-free hotline, according to the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence.

League City residents are encouraged to take a stand against domestic violence and are encouraged to get involved throughout the month of October.

“This month is an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about preventing domestic violence and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services and assistance to victims,” said Paulissen. “I urge our citizens to work together to eliminate domestic violence in our community.”

The League City Police Department is scheduled to host a Candlelight Vigil to honor survivors and families of domestic violence victims on Oct. 8, 2015 at 7 p.m. at 555 W. Walker St.

Additionally, the Resource and Crisis Center of Galveston County is collecting donated goods for use at the Family Violence Center.

The Resource and Crisis Center of Galveston County is available to assist victims of domestic violence through a number of resources such as their 24-hour crisis hotline at (888) 919-7233 (SAFE). Survivors and victims of domestic violence can also seek assistance from the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-7233 (SAFE) or by visiting www.thehotline.org.
